An image from Walter Benjamin's writing is the inspiration for the series, titled
The Angel of History. In "Thesis on the Philosophy of History", written shortly before his death,
Walter Benjamin describes one of Paul Klee's watercolors: Angelus Novus. This small painting, which he owned,
portrays an angel. As Benjamin saw it, a wind from paradise has caught the angel's wings and blown it backwards
into the future. It looks out on the past, mouth open in astonishment and dismay, at a pile of rubble growing ever
larger: history as catastrophe.
Since 2002, Aura Rosenberg has been developing a series of digital photo collages based on these themes.
